gifts for a fashion student

Hey Santa, *wink wink* *nudge nudge*.

To conclude my fifth consecutive semester as a fashion student (and my first semester in New York), I've come to learn a few things about myself and the lovely ladies & gents around me in class.

First of all, everyone is career driven. From the get-go. It's a little overwhelming at first, but nobody is really here to mess around (and if they are, you can tell). People in fashion school tend to take things pretty seriously given how competitive of an industry that it is. It seems like the overarching motto that runs through everyone's head on a constant basis is, "if you're not working, you're losing." Whether it be at an actual job, on your homework, a personal project, an internship assignment, or networking with industry professionals, this statement holds true. It's pretty safe to say that if you're in fashion, you have to be focused to be successful.

Second of all, shit is expensive. Whether it be that new software you really want to get, that online course you've been convincing yourself to take, or just a really fly outfit to wear for your interviews, making it in fashion (especially in New York) isn't cheap by any means necessary. And when owning your personal brand is essentially your ticket to ride when it comes to landing your dream job, these things become crucial to making you (and your resume) stand out in a crowd.

So, without further ado, here is a list I compiled of everything that the fashion student in your life might have on their holiday wishlist this year.

1) A PLANNER.

Duuuuuuuuhhhhh. All of those homework assignments, interviews, appointments, gallery exhibits aren't just going to magically fit themselves into your busy schedule. Balancing school & work is hard enough, so keeping organized is a must.

2) Laptop accessories

Between commuting to and from classes, to your internship, to the library and everywhere in between, your laptop is going to need to be protected. And considering that everyone and their mother owns the exact same MacBook, these will definitely help in distinguishing yours from the masses.

3) Desk accessories

Anything that will not only help keep you and your desk organized, but is also aesthetically pleasing is a major plus. Halfway through the semester when you're up to your neck in papers, you'll thank me.

4) Chargers, chargers, & more chargers

If I had a dollar for every time my phone said low battery when I was out & about without a charger...I'd have enough money to buy a portable charger.

5) Notebooks & folders

6) A subscription to your favorite Vogue

This seems like something that should be included as a part of your tuition when you're in fashion school. But until that day comes, a subscription will do.

7) Adobe Creative Cloud Subscription

For all of your CAD needs. This includes Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Muse, and more.

8) Business of Fashion Online Course

These newly introduced courses are the perfect resume booster & a great way to learn about whatever topic you choose in an interactive format through lessons and videos. They currently offer these masterclasses in styling, fashion history, and buying & merchandising.
